Wrapped steering wheel trim piece and got a leather airbag cover

1058 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  NewShockerGuy
I was bored the other day so I wrapped the steering wheel trim piece in the same vinyl that I have on the glove box, and window control switches. The hardest part was teh top two edges of the trim piece. It took me over an hour to do those little pieces compared to that same amount of time for the larger lower portion..

I used a square that I had to do the right steering wheel control switch trim piece. Last picture. Not sure if I like that look or if it would look better doing the other side. I might do that tonight to see. I don't want it looking too busy.

Probably won't put it on the car until the weekend. I'll take new pics then.

Leather on left, plastic on right.

With the leather wrapped airbag cover. You can see in this picture the right steering wheel control trim is also wrapped. Unsure how I feel about it, or if doing the other side would make it look better since it's hard to tell. Or it might be too much..lol. But the air bag covers makes such a nice difference. Makes me want to buy a new steering wheel because the previous person before me could have taken better care of it...

I'll say it here to that I think it looks good in the last pic to do all the sections, especially if you get the vinyl lined up.
I'll wrap the other side and see how it looks. It's almost impossible to line up this vinyl only because of the pattern and how it's oriented. I'd be wasting a lot trying to get it to be the same grain/pattern from top to bottom. The top little two sections of the steering wheel trim flow with the lower portion so that's good. But the steering wheel button pieces will be impossible to match up and or your eye won't even notice. If I can find a spare set of steering wheel control trim pieces, I'd like to sand them smooth so that the little dimples aren't present. It gives a weird texture to the vinyl in the last picture. Part of me likes the unwrapped portion of the steering wheel control piece cause then your eye goes from the bottom to the little top nub and it looks nice., where it all flows on the right, which isn't bad, just different.

There's no OEM part number for the leather air bag cover as this is aftermarket. But there are several places that sell air bag covers. A good note to know is that the RC/RCF/NX/CT all use the same airbag style up to a certain year. So my 2016 CT's airbag cover is the same as my wife's 18'NX and my 2020 RCF. It's nice Lexus used the same part... so if you find a seller that has one listed but not the other, as long as it looks like what you have, you will be good to go. Installation is about a 15-minute job.
Both air bag covers are from two different people.

This is what it looks like on my RCF, though you can't tell from the picture it's the exact stitch color that is on my shift knob and steering wheel. On the CT I just went with "gray" stitching and it's almost identical to the RCF one. So now looking at it, I don't think I needed to go through the trouble of getting it custom matched. (no one would notice but me)

Thank you!

I still haven't put the airbag or controls back in the car yet. I'm doing an LED conversion so I figure I might as well change the steering wheel leds to white while I am doing the rest of the car so then I don't have to keep taking the air bag out and back and forth..lol
