I just got my windshield replaced today because a big rock caused a large chip and 3 large cracks. The new windshield is the Lexus OEM windshield. Looks like the installer did an excellent job installing the windshield. However, when I went home and tried to clean it, it won't come clean! It appears that there are streaks actually INSIDE the two layers of glass, is this even possible? I clean from the outside, no change, I clean from the inside, no change. When looking at the glass from the inside, it appears that the streaks are on the outside, and when I look at the glass from the outside it looks like the streaks are on the inside. You can only see them in the right light, or if you shine a flashlight onto the windshield. Then it's really easy to see.

Guess I'm going back tomorrow to have them look at it again.

Ha, nevermind. I put the car in the garage, turned the lights out, and used a flashlight and finally saw that the problem was just the fact that the windshield was filthy on both sides. I used a combination of dry terry cloth, followed by a well used cotton cloth (to pick up the little fibers left behind by the terry cloth), and basically made myself a human orbital sander for almost an hour. I now have it just about sparkly clean. Before it was hot outside and I was using Windex which I think just made the glass more streaky then it was to start with, which is why I thought the streaks were inside the glass.

Ok, so this thread isn't completely useless, what's the best way that you guys clean your windshields? The dry soft cloth seemed to work the best for me, Windex just made a big mess.

The best is to use newspaper, it comes out super clean and streak free. Sounds counter intuitive but try it next time.

Thanks, I read that on a few places on the web as well. It does seem strange but I'll give it a try this weekend. The windshield is clean enough for now (safe for driving) but it's not up to my clean standards. It's amazing how much crap was on the windshield when they installed it!

So just to be clear, you suggest newspaper with Windex, or is there something that works better with the newspaper?

I use Invisible Glass from Stoner. that stuff works wonders, and now it has a Rain-X type additive so water just flys off the windshield.

i believe newspaper works well because it has ammonia in the ink, same ingredient in windex that makes it work well
