I think Lexus was aware of the similarities between hatchbacks, especially when many automakers are trying to make their vehicles as aerodynamic as possible for better fuel efficiency thus resulting in a similar shape. I believe Lexus tried to seperate themselves by creating the CT a bit different in the rear, particularly with the rear trunk (or otherwise known as the dust magnet). A good thing about the CT compared to the Mazda3 is it doesn't have a giant smile on the front of the vehicle.

The Mazda 3 does have a huge smile, which is rather odd when looking in your rear view.
