You don't need to go into neutral, at least not in my experience. The object of the game is just coasting. The pulse part is just getting up to enough speed so that you can coast without making other drivers too crazy. 
I've had the EV light come on at 40 mph or so as I'm gliding -- and it actually feels kinda more like gliding than coasting. The engine seems to have been build with that in mind. It's pretty slick.
So I guess you're in neutral spiritually, so to speak, but I don't change gears or anything like that. I just take my foot off the gas. Good old coasting.
