Thank you, IS250, for finding out how to replicate this problem. I am sure it will go a long way toward getting an ultimate solution (if anyone at Lexus or Apple cares one bit). I can now show them exactly what the problem is.
The reason this makes no sense is that all the power outlets on the Lexus are switched, which means that if you leave your phone in the car (as I do, I answer enough times during the day!), you pretty much have to shut it off to avoid running the power down. On my Ford, it was an always powered, so I could leave the phone on when I shut down at night.
