I recently changed the 12V starter battery and surprisingly my MPG improved. Running with a deteriorated 12V battery causes the ICE to engage more often and diminishes MPG (?). Has anyone else noticedbthis phenomenon? I drive no more than 10 miles per day usually and no highway. I would consistently get 36 to 38 mpg shown to me. Now its show 41 to 42 mpg. Haven't changed anything else.

Are you sure it's not just warmer weather and warmer gas mixtures? My 12v battery seems to be almost shot, but I get ~45 mpg
I don't think so. Because it was consistantly @38 mpg since before last summer.

Yes, it was the OEM agm battery. One day I went out and the car opened up but wouldnt boot up and then I couldn't lock the car or anything. Just gave me an error message, but I knew it was the 12v battery because it was 7 years old. Battery failure is usually a deterioration in capacity. If the 12v is constantly being charged as Toby points out, by the hybrid battery, it would mean a deteriorated 12v battery would be constant be drawing power from the hybrid battery. I will need to look to the capacity of each battery and figure out how much a drain that may result.

Ok I read about replacing a bad or ailing 12v battery (mine was original - 2007 - and resting at 10.1v) and an increase in mpg's. But I didnt expect...
