The service manual has the steps to remove it. If you don't have it you can find a link on this forum if you search. Here's a writeup I did when I installed a subwoofer that shows what you will be getting into. Yes, it really is necessary to remove that big pile of interior parts just to get to the radio.

just to give you a heads up...when you go to plug the 71-1761 harnes into your factory radio you will need to use a little more force to push the plugs in. It's been that way with Toyota/Lexus radios pretty much since the 71-1761 harness was made.

the next step would be to replace the speakers also. that makes a huge difference.

 

Thanks for the reply. I could not download the service manual for the instructions on how to remove the head unit. Anybody have a functioning link. Also, is there any room behind the stock stereo to leave the small alpine power pack?

There was some room behind the stereo, but I'm not sure how much of that was taken back up by all the connectors when I put the stereo back in. There is a ton of crap connected to this stereo.
