Engine replacement?

18952 Views 33 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  internalaudit
Hello I am new here. I have a 2015 ct with 98k miles on it. My ct at first started rattling bad and then I noticed my coolant was starting to disappear. So I talked to my mechanic and he said if your coolant is disappearing it's a bad head gasket. So my question is. Has anyone replaced the engine on a ct? If so. Is there any reprogramming to do once you replace it? Thanks for the help in advance.

Just replace the head gasket is more sensible. You don’t need to replace the engine.

Is it? Since it all started the car has starting over heating. Would it just be a head gasket job? Thank you for the reply @stormchaser
I'm considering the same thing: repair or replace, both around the same cost... Mine is overheating, no knocking, no shake, but I don't know what else it could be besides a head gasket. If interested in knowing more about what I'm experiencing, check out my post on the matter.

If you do replace the engine, it’s pretty easy to take out. You don’t even need to touch anything with the drive train other than the 9 bolts connecting the trans to the engine.

Have you replaced one? Is there anything that needs to be done with the computer any reprogramming of anything?

I just finished swapping one out, and I didn’t do anything with the computer. Everything worked great.

Thank you for that info sir. Would you suggest to just replace head gasket or replace engine?
This one the head was warped beyond repair even after decking it. I got the new engine for $1200 shipped with low miles. We lost more time taking the head to the machine shop and what not than ordering and swapping the new engine.

A straight engine swap will have no effect on its running as long as the ECU isn’t changed you will have no problems.

I did replace the head gasket in mine, it wasn’t too bad, it took some time and wasn’t really fun, but it was doable—however the result was not so good

You need a new engine buddy.Your engine is compressing water therefore it cause that cylinder to not fire hence the rattle sound at cold start.

Thanks for the input, but can you elaborate? What would the cause of the be?
1200 is a great price. I recently blew a hole in the side on my CT engine. How can i find an engine for around the same price?

Just an update, now that the car is totally fixed and I was forced to replace the hybrid battery because of the excess strain it endured from a year's worth of driving with a bad head gasket....the engine shake was NOT because it was compressing water or any other crazy theory. No, I did not have to replace the engine... It was, in fact, a simple ground wire that I failed to tighten down after I replaced the head gasket. It only cost me $500 and a week's time to have Lexus to figure it out...but at least I got them to do a compression test to make sure the engine is good. Oh, the money wasted on solving this riddle....

Did you ever get an answer? I replaced the engine but still the shudder won't go away 😔
Not sure if I need to do something around reprogramming/calibration...

Hi, where did you get the new engine from?

No programming or recalibration needed. If you replaced the engine and is still shuddering at cold start, then the replacement engine had the same problem as your old engine. Should have just replaced the gasket. If it ran fine for a awhile and it started shuddering in the morning, then youre plugs are fouling due to oil via pcv and it will lead to gasket issues and clogged egr and you'll be back to square 1. If the engine came with a warranty, use it. No warranty, then youre Sol.

Why do you need a new engine? Is it worn out or is it going crazy when you cold start?
