Did I get a lemon? MPG not so great... :-(

Just got a 2011 CT200h. Bone stock premium model. 66,000 miles.

The car runs perfect and drives great. But....gas mileage. We are lucky to get 35 mpg. On road trips going the 75 mph speed limit we get 33 or so mpg. We have gone as low as 28 mpg running 80 or so with wind. My wife did everything she could on one tank of gas and did manage right at 40.

In town we are lucky to get 35 or 37.

Something wrong or just very dependent on the way you drive it? We expected 40ish in mixed driving but can't really come close.

Thank you,
Rob

Try driving at 60 or 65 mph and watch what happens.
At 75 to 80 you’re not going to get very high mpg. As said back off a bit and it’ll get better.

Good advice above. I don't know where you located, but for me the things that lower mpg most have been cold ambient temperatures, driving in hilly terrain, and speed. Tire selection and inflation can also have a negative affect. I often take a certain trip that is about 150 miles. On an 80F degree day, flat terrain, and 65 mph with some traffic, I usually get 52 to 55mpg. But driving a mile to my mailbox at the bottom of a hill and back each day will net me 31mpg.

You were able to get 40 mpg on one tank so you're not too far off from the rated 43 mpg. Good suggestions from others regarding tire pressure and speed. I would also just get a new engine air filter unless you know it was changed recently. Change the cabin filter while you're at it, won't affect mpg, both can be bought on ebay as a combo pack for $12. Little changes here and there will add up to improved mpg.

It is cold ambient air temp. The last trip was Seattle to Great Falls, MT. 10 hour drive. If I was going to go 15mph under the speed limit it would be a 12 hour drive :).
Tire pressure is right and stock wheels.

I wish it better but we don't live in a warm environment with flat ground. We got the same mileage with my wifes old 2004 Corrolla with 200,000 miles.

I didn't mean drive that speed all the time. I meant try driving 60 MPH for example on some highway in the right lane and watch your fuel economy gauges to see what your car is showing you're getting. This will give you a baseline comparison to other speeds and factors in your normal driving. I drove every hybrid I've ever tried at 60 MPH on the highway with cruise on and use that to compare them. It's the closest I get to lab-specific conditions across each vehicle drive.

Hell, I got 31 MPG out of the NX 200t, and 29.5 out of a brand new RX350. Even non-hybrids get good mileage if you drive them in their sweet spots. No car will get good economy at 70-80 MPH because of the drag from the air at that speed, until we have new advancements in aerodynamics and engine efficiencies. If that's how fast you normally drive, you may not want to bother with a hybrid.
