What would be the first thing you would do to increase the horsepower on this baby?

Hybrids are notoriously difficult to modify for extra horsepower. I have a few thoughts and comments, though:

- Given that CT 200h uses a variant of the 3rd-gen Toyota Prius' powertrain, visit PriusChat or some similar forum and see if anyone there has done anything noteworthy.

- Wait and see if the fact that Lexus has registered CT 300h and CT 400h trademarks translates into those more powerful from the factory models later on.

- Bear in mind that the CT 200h's powertrain is NOT 100% identical to the Prius', since the Lexus' full-on Sport mode that seemingly works like virtual boost isn't on the Prius.

Well, they are set up for economy. Starting at a low baseline like that is a hard thing to do. Any power upgrades would require higher flow fuel etc... as the car will come set up for straight efficiency.

It all depends what technology will be used by Lexus. There are sever ways to regulate fuel consumption. Now, a sports mode could electronically just shut down the 'economical' way of driving, use all the power in the battery (which will give sufficient amount of torque from baseline on) and all the power from a 1.8L engine. In this case, considering the 1.8L engine supporting economical driving in a hybrid situation, could generate an estimated 130HP max. Any more and the emission will go up too much. But this is an estimation. I base this on an interview I saw about 4 months ago about the prius.

A turbo would be SO awesome. Would be crazy if you put a turbo on this car. I think a nice 180BHP should be easily reachable. And that combined with max torque from 750 RPM will be crazy. In that case, the acceleration to 60 will be under 8 seconds I think.

I believe if you supercharge an Atkinson engine it becomes a Miller cycle engine. Maybe if enough people bug a certain British company (Controlled Power Technologies... VTES), they can change their electric supercharger for a 12V battery to the 650V system found in the CT200h.

Can't see why you can't tune the CT thru chiptuning or ODB path. If they have already a wide body kit, this car must be heading toward aftermarket modding scene for internal part too. Maybe there will be a F sport package soon.

F sport package likely won't include engine mods. The car is meant to be eco-friendly. Altho someone posted above about the trademarks of CT300h and CT400h possibly existing.

chiptune or OBD path??? LOL. clearly. you have never modded a Toyota product. Toyota source code is difficult to overcome vs the tunability of the Nissan and Honda product out there.

Odds of any ECU tuning are slim to none without daughterboarding it which will cause havoc on the warranty and who knows what else. That's the only way it's worked in the past with Toyota ECU's. They are super sneaky with their coding.

Honestly, a cold air intake and full exhaust MIGHT net you a few extra HP, but the secret sauce is in the electric motor.

Some Prius guys have managed to run the car on a user selectable mode (100% electric, 100% gas, or traditional) and managed 100+mpg around town. You just need those same guys to help find a way to double the voltage output of the batteries when you crank on the skinny pedal. Double the voltage, double the electric power (or thereabouts)!!

Of course that would be for quick sprints, passes or 0-60 runs. Regardless I think there's potential. It's only a matter of time





That, or do what Team Lexus does.... own a fast car on the side to get it out of your system.

I've owned and modified enough cars to know that.... streetable compromises are just that..... compromises.

In racing, they have a saying: Cheap, fast, reliable; pick two.

In tuning and modding, I have a saying: comfortable reliability and fuel economy for the street or high output HP & stiffness for the track; pick one.

honest answer with no sarcasm: get another car.

HP is depending on how you measure it. The CT has a high 98hp gas engine and an 80hp electric motor..but in normal mode they supply 500v to the electric motor so it doesn't produce full power...(650v for sport mode... so total system power does go up) also they avg. the output of the 2, with the reduced voltage/current of normal mode and only claim around 135 total system hp.... Where Ford makes a much more opt. claim for the Fusion by simply adding the 2 power sources together to claim 190+...but it is reportedly only .10 sec quicker 0-60 than the Prius. So a stock CT in Sport mode (quite a noticeable difference) should easily take a Focus... if not the upcoming SC CT200h by Fox should take care of that... The CT, while not fast, is responsive and good handling...I compare it to my wife's old college car, an e36 325i BMW... not all that fast, but very fun to drive...
