Dealer says its about a $9500 job to replace the longblock. Just not worth it. Only offering roughly $500 for `scrap' value. Sword through my heart.

Any thoughts of options to either:
A. Fix it more reasonably?
B. Better option than just scrapping it?

Sorrowful day!

My goodness. Sorry to hear that. Have you tried a 3rd party mechanic? I'm sure you could sell the car non-running for far more than the scrap value.

If the car is in good shape -- get a used engine. Pick a Prius w/ under 100k.

Did they give you any reason for the failure? make sure the replacement engine has a cleaned intake and EGR .

A used LKQ engine with like 60K miles and swap is about $5,500.
My guess the dealer was going to use a new engine and also sub the work out to a 3rd party mechanic thus $9,500.They probably marked it up $2K for a warranty.

These engine failures are common on these prius engines. These engines are very fagile, but my theory right now is shops put wrong oil in them thus causing these issues. An owner will have no idea if a shop uses 10w oil instead of 0w oil.
