It is like a regen system that even uses braking power to charge the battery. This is straight from the Lexus website and it is fairly understandable:

During strong acceleration, and when maximum power is required, Lexus Hybrid Drive simultaneously uses its internal combustion engine and electric-drive motor for exceptional performance. When the electric-drive motor complements the gasoline engine, it provides higher torque, which in turn results in smoother acceleration, free from gearshift lag. With regenerative braking, the electric motor functions as a generator during coasting and braking. Energy that would normally be lost as heat is captured as electrical energy, which is then used to recharge the battery. And while traditional transmissions use fixed gears, the Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT) contains an infinite number of gear ratios to help provide optimal performance for all driving conditions.
